Ownership and funding in the TV and film industries
Public Service Broadcasting (PSB)
In the 1920's Public Broadcasting started being thought about by the Government as in the USA they already where using radios to sell products to people, that's where we get the name soap opera from, over in Briton. But we didn't like the advertising model over in the US as it was full of low quality content to attract a wide mass audience and only for pure entertainment. We thought it was more exploitative and we wanted something that "informed, educate and then entertain."

But the Government wanted to fund this service but then problems then raised from this being a Government funded thing would mean that some people might think that it being used for proper-gander reasons.
To get round this. they came up with licencing fee. The fee was put in place like taxes so it was more like the population was paying for it rather than the Government paying for it. so people originally thought that you had to have this to own a TV
But they needed a name for this new broadcasting station so they called it the BBC (British Broadcasting Company) and they first started broadcasting in 1926 under the lead or Lord Reith, the first DG of the BBC stated "We have founded a system based on public broadcasting rather than exploitation"
Then in 1936 the BBC began broadcasting on TVs in the UK and at the time of that, they held the monopoly for TVs as they where the only channel that was broadcast in Britain at the current time

Commercial Broadcasting
then in the 1950's. the Government decided to try and break the monopoly by introducing a new TC channel called ITV (Independent Television). It then began broadcasting on 1954 and now the British television . Another reason for the commercial broadcasting is that a company might want to escape the way of government censors ship. United States first model radio was based around this model

Subscription
Subscription based services such as Netflix, NowTV Provide a payable way to watch what you want when you want by allowing you to pay X amount of money to watch them. By doing this they generate their income by allowing there users to pay the full amount of money up front or giving them the choice to only pay for say one month or a whole year. The downside to paying for these is that one show that you might be interested in may not be on the service you’re paying for.
Originally the whole subscription based service used to only be based around news papers and magazines, this changed when Netflix started allowing people to subscribe to them and they would send their subscribers DVDs for them to rent out, they then went to streaming starting in 2007 and this is when they really started to take off as a streaming company making them quickly rise to the top of the streaming services
